Specialty Analytical is Awarded Contract by US Fish and Wildlife
The light-footed clapper rail (Rallus longirostris levipes) is a state and federally listed endangered species that is resident in coastal wetlands in southern California and northern Baja, California, Mexico. Loss and degradation of habitat threaten the continued existence of this bird, in spite of ongoing management efforts.
Ecuador locals say thanks to Specialty Analytical.
Specialty Analytical has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Environmental Contaminants Division to analyze avian tissue samples for a variety of Inorganic and Organic constituents including PCB and PBDE (Polybrominated Diethyl Ether) congeners by EPA Methods 1668 and 1614.
The analysis is part of a multiyear investigation to obtain direct measures of contaminant exposure by embryos and juvenile/adult light-footed clapper rails inhabiting marshes at three coastal southern California locations. This investigation entails the collection of eggs, feathers and blood samples from light-footed clapper rails inhabiting marshes at each of the three sites.
Samples will be received by the laboratory, freeze dried, homogenized and prepared for organic analysis by Pressurized Fluid Extraction (PFE), EPA Method 3545 Accelerated Solvent Exchange (ASE). Extracts will be analzyed for OCPs (Organochlorine Pesticides) by EPA 8081, PCB congeners by EPA 1668 and PBDE, flame retardant chemicals, by EPA 1614 using a triple quad GC/MS/MS. Additional samples will be digested for metals analysis by ICP/MS, EPA 6020.
