Soil summary

Specialty Analytical routinely analyzes waste samples for hazardous characteristics using TCLP Method 1311 and SPLP Method 1312. The EPA has developed and published guidelines for hazardous waste identification in 40 CFR part 261 of the Federal Register. The guidelines give four characteristics of waste that need to be considered before they can be deemed hazardous: Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity and Toxicity.

Toxicity is determined by using EPA Method 1311 TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure). The purpose of the TCLP is to simulate the leaching potential of a waste sample in a sanitary landfill by determining the mobility of specific organic and inorganic analytes by extraction with an acetic acid solution. The TCLP leachate is then analyzed for the presence of 39 chemicals listed in 40 CFR part 261 to determine toxicity.
